Alabama still has a long way to go to immunize all of its healthcare workers and nursing home residents, but the image of the next person to receive the vaccines is starting to emerge.
As of December 27, the state has administered vaccines to 20,354 of the more than 300,000 healthcare workers and residents and nursing home staff who make up Phase 1A of the state’s vaccine distribution plan.
But once these are more advanced in 2021, the state will move on to the next phases of the plan.
We don’t know when Alabama can move on to the next phase, but here is the general order in which people will receive the vaccine.
- Phase 1A: The first series of vaccines were designed for frontline healthcare workers, residents and employees of long-term care facilities or other long-term care facilities, as well as laboratory workers or staff performing COVID-19 tests and pathologists performing autopsies on people known or suspected to be infected. when they died. These health workers have been organized into more detailed levels based on their level of perceived risk in their work, with those most at risk being vaccinated first. This phase is currently underway.
- Phase 1B: The next level to receive the vaccine includes Alabamians aged 75 or older, as well as those considered essential frontline workers. This includes police and firefighters, U.S. Postal Service employees, correctional officers, food and agricultural workers, manufacturing workers, grocery store workers, and transit workers. . Phase 1B also includes those working in the education sector, such as teachers, support staff, and educators.
- Phase 1C: Phase 1C includes all Alabamians aged 65 and over, as well as those aged 16 to 64 with high-risk medical conditions. These conditions include: cancer, chronic kidney disease, COPD, heart disease such as heart failure, coronary artery disease or cardiomyopathy, immunocompromised state, solid organ transplant, obesity (BM> 30 kg / m2), sickle cell anemia, smoking, type 2 diabetes and pregnancy. This phase also includes additional essential workers in transport and logistics, waste and sewage, catering, shelter and housing (for example, construction), finance (for example, counters banks), information and communication technologies, energy, legal, media, security (eg engineers) and public health workers.
- Phase 2: Phase 2 includes the general public and all Alabamians not included in phase 1.
ADPH does not have a detailed timeline for when it could move from one phase to the next. The ministry says it will notify people on its website and through press releases when new groups of people are eligible to receive the vaccine.
Alabama state health official Dr Scott Harris said it could be months before the vaccine is available to the general public.
“We want to manage people’s expectations appropriately and remind the public that not everyone can access the vaccine right now,” Harris said in a press release. “For the New Years holidays and beyond, I encourage people to stay home and keep their events short, outdoors when possible, and only with everyone wearing masks. “
