OZAUKEE COUNTY – The pharmacist accused of intentionally wasting nearly 600 doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine at a clinic in Grafton made his first appearance in Ozaukee court on Monday.

Steven Brandenburg is the pharmacist accused of intentionally spoiling vials of vaccine at Grafton Aurora Medical Center on December 24.

According to a probable cause statement, Brandenburg removed the box containing the vaccine from a refrigerator and left it out for 12 hours, rendering it useless.

Brandenburg told investigators he believed the vaccine was not safe for people and would “harm them and change their DNA,” depending on the probable cause. Brandenburg, according to the Grafton Police Department, is a “recognized conspiracy theorist.”

Brandenburg was arrested on December 31 on charges of recklessly endangering first-degree safety, tampering with a prescription drug and criminal damage to property.

57 people received the vaccine after leaving it out, but there appeared to be no health damage, Aurora officials said.
