Denver Broncos: Joe Ellis will not ask for extension after 2021

In an interview with 9News on Tuesday, Joe Ellis announced that he would not seek any extensions after his contract ends. His current contract, like that of John Elway, runs until March 2022. That means Elway and Ellis could be completed in Denver after next season.

“I don’t plan to extend this beyond that, except maybe just a transition period if necessary,” Ellis said in an interview with 9NEWS on Tuesday. “But that would be dedicated to finding a replacement as club president or CEO, depending on what the next owner – be it Brittany or someone else – where it ends.

The implications of this news could be huge for the future of the franchise. With the legal battle between the Bowlen children ongoing and, at the moment, unresolved, a sale is much more likely than a resolution in my opinion.

With Ellis being fired so soon, I think it could also indicate that he thinks a sale is almost certain. If the transfer of power went to Brittany Bowlen, he would likely need to stay awhile to help her take control of the day-to-day running of the franchise.

As a fan, I think that’s actually a good thing. I don’t believe any of the Bowlen kids showed the passion and love for football that Pat Bowlen had and they probably wouldn’t appreciate the winning culture and desire to compete for championships as strongly as Pat did. . A new owner could breathe blood and ideas into the organization that could help it break free from that five-year rut it has found itself in since winning Super Bowl 50.

The other caveat here concerns the immediate implications of the Broncos’ GM search. If I came away with a feeling that a sale is likely, then why would a highly sought-after type of CEO talent want this job knowing there could be a new owner as early as this year?
