Philips Hue launches long-awaited light switch module and more

Signify today presents three new Philips Hue products: a recessed Hue module for existing light switches, a new outdoor light bar and a stylish dimmer.

The Philips Hue wall switch module solves a problem long suffered by owners of Hue smart lights. Namely, you install a so-called “smart” Hue bulb in a lamp or ceiling light, then marvel at your ability to control it from your phone until a roommate flips the wall switch and turns it off. powering the bulb, making your expensive bulb unnecessary. The new wall switch module – powered by a battery with a lifespan of at least five years, according to Signify – puts intelligence inside the wall to make the switch smart. Unfortunately, the switch module does not make ordinary lights smart, it only controls Hue smart lights. The Hue wall switch module will retail for $ 39.95 / € 39.95, or $ 69.95 / € 69.95 for a two-pack when it launches in Europe in March, followed by North America in summer.

Full details on the installation in the wall can be found at Hueblog if you want to replace the light switches in your house with Hue.

The Philips Hue Amarant is a $ 169.99 / € 149.99 light bar that can be installed outdoors to bathe the side of a house, hedge or fence in multicolored light. Amarant is 79.5 cm (31 inches) wide and reaches a maximum of 1400 lumens. It requires a Hue power supply which can be purchased separately. The Philips Hue Amarant is now available in Europe, but won’t ship to North America until early March.

Finally, there’s an upgrade to the Philips Hue Magnetic Dimmer with a removable wall plate that lets your family and guests control Hue lighting without an app. Unlike the new wall module, the dimmer is a fake wall switch that sticks to any wall with duct tape. At least in Europe, the new dimmer slightly reduces the list price compared to the original, according to Hueblog, while retaining the same functionality in a somewhat refined form. It’s available from January 26 in Europe for € 19.99 before arriving in North America on February 23 for $ 24.99.

The magnetic dimmer can be attached to the wall plate or detached for use as a remote control.
