A new COVID-19 vaccination center has opened in Jones Beach, and state officials are encouraging people to use this location rather than smaller sites.
Thursday was the first day of operation, and it will be open everyday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
People with appointments drove and were vaccinated in their cars. The site will be open every day.
News 12 has learned that there is a delay of 14 weeks or more to make appointments due to vaccine availability.
At a press conference in Jones Beach, state officials said a total of 700 people were to be vaccinated on Thursday and they could receive up to 10,000 people a day with more vaccines.
The state is now asking the federal government to provide more vaccines. New York is currently receiving about 300,000 doses per week.
“We need more vaccines. The point is, there are over 7 million New Yorkers eligible for the vaccine, yet we only get 300,000 doses per week from the federal government. At this rate, it will take us six months to get all of those currently eligible, ”says Erik Kulleseid, Commissioner of National Parks.
Officials say all Jones Beach appointments are booked through April, but they will be able to open more appointments as more vaccines enter the system.
Many people who were able to get a date say it took a lot of patience, including hours in front of a computer pressing the refresh button.
“As I won the lottery. It’s just long and frustrating, I know a lot of people are probably going through this, especially those who don’t have computers, rely on phone calls,” says Richard Torggler , 79 years old. , from East Northport. “It’s almost an impossible task. You just need to be vigilant and not give up.”
Those who get the shot at Jones Beach are scheduled for their second date when they leave.
