The Oregon Convention Center will be the site of a mass vaccination clinic

Kaiser Permanente, Providence, Legacy Health, and Oregon Health and Science University are pooling their COVID-19 vaccine doses and staff to run a clinic at the Northeast Portland Convention Center.

The goal will be to get the clinic up and running next week to serve Portland residents eligible to receive the vaccine.

The plan comes as housekeeper Kate Brown has said that starting next Saturday, January 23, people over 65 and teachers will be able to get vaccinated.

One of the barriers to delivering vaccines to large groups of people at the site, according to hospital officials, is having sufficient supplies. Wendy Watson, chief operating officer of Kaiser Permanente, said they were waiting for the larger vaccine supply promised by the federal government.

“Now, how quickly we increase it really depends on the vaccine supply,” Watson said. “Probably the biggest constraint in all of this is the speed at which vaccine doses get to these mass vaccination sites.”

Watson said health systems are in the early stages of planning for a similar site in southwest Washington.
