Coronavirus
EL PASO, Texas – The El Paso Department of Public Health announced on Thursday that it had received 5,000 additional vaccines against Covid-19 after it ran out of its previous 5,000 doses during a mega-site distribution earlier this week .
News of the receipt of the added vaccines came when County Judge Ricardo Samaniego and Mayor Oscar Leeser held a press conference on the success of El Paso’s vaccination efforts so far.
The health department said those who have pre-registered for the vaccination should be on the lookout for a phone call or email if they are selected to be vaccinated in this next cycle.
The latest vaccines will be given at a rate of 1,000 a day starting Friday, Lesser said.
Only those who are healthcare workers, who are over 65, or who have a critical medical condition are currently eligible to receive vaccination as per Texas state guidelines.
Officials said El Paso gets about 3% of the state’s last vaccine quota, even though the community represents less than 2% of the state’s population.
Across Texas, the state has now distributed more than one million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine on Thursday, according to Governor Greg Abbott’s office.
