30 more deaths have been reported in Maine as health officials on Saturday reported 438 more cases of the coronavirus across the state.
Saturday’s report brings the total number of coronavirus cases in Maine to 33,219, according to the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention. This is up from 32,781 on Friday.
Of those, 27,249 were confirmed positive, while 5,970 were classified as “probable cases,” reported the Maine CDC.
The 30 additional deaths reported today include one resident of Androscoggin County, four residents of Aroostook County, five residents of Cumberland County, two residents of Hancock County, one resident of Kennebec County, four residents of the county of Oxford, eight residents of Penobscot County and five residents of York County, bringing the statewide death toll to 507.
Twenty-three of the additional deaths reported today have been confirmed by examination of vital records, the Maine CDC said. The deaths have all occurred since December 24, 2020.
The Maine CDC continues to report high and widespread levels of community transmission, defined as a case rate of 16 or more per 10,000 people, even in counties once largely untouched by the worst of the pandemic.
There are two criteria for establishing community transmission: at least 10 confirmed cases and at least 25 percent of these are neither related to known cases nor to travel.
So far, 1,242 Mainers have been hospitalized at some point with COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. Of these, 194 patients are currently hospitalized, including 59 in intensive care and 22 on a ventilator.
Vaccinations have been administered to 78,805 Mainers to date, with 11,537 having received two doses.
There were 1,328,905 negative test results out of a total of 1,368,816. About 2.85 percent of all tests came back positive, the most recent Maine CDC data available.
The coronavirus has hit hardest in Cumberland County, where 9,735 cases have been reported and the bulk of deaths from the virus – 124 – have been concentrated. Other cases have been reported in Androscoggin (3563), Aroostook (1011), Franklin (561), Hancock (680), Kennebec (2535), Knox (479), Lincoln (393), Oxford (1549), Penobscot ( 2850), Piscataquis (162), Sagadahoc (613), Somerset (938), Waldo (428), Washington (492) and York (7222). Information on where eight additional cases were reported was not immediately available.
As of Saturday morning, the coronavirus had sickened 23,532,606 people in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and caused 392,139 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University of Medicine. .
