–On the recommendation of the local “Vaccine Working Group”, based on the current vaccine supply and the risk of serious consequences from COVID-19, adults 75 years of age and older can be vaccinated against COVID -19 by appointment in one of the two clinics in San Luis County of Obispo from Monday.
People 75 and over are the first group in Phase 1b of the county’s COVID-19 vaccine distribution who may start scheduling vaccination appointments for next week.
“We need to allocate our limited vaccine supply based on who is most at risk for serious illness or death from COVID-19,” said Dr Penny Borenstein, county health official. “Here in SLO County, more than three-quarters of those who have died from COVID-19 were 75 years of age or older. They are at greater risk of serious illness or death than other age groups. By allowing them to get vaccinated now, we are all helping to avoid the most serious consequences. “
While only those 75 and over will make up the first group in Phase 1b of the county’s vaccine distribution plan, those aged 65 to 74 will later be included as part of Phase 1b vaccinations. SLO County is home to more than 26,000 people aged 75 and over, but it only has enough vaccines next week to immunize 4,000 people.
The Paso Robles Event Center vaccination clinic (opening Monday) will take up to 400 appointments per day next week, while the San Luis Obispo vaccination clinic will take up to 750 appointments per day to accommodate those who need their second dose. As more vaccines become available, the county will aim to serve up to 1,000 people per day at each clinic.
The county plans to open a supplemental vaccination clinic in South County when more vaccines arrive from the state. To allow those 75 and over to access vaccines in a timely manner, San Luis Obispo County Public Health is asking residents to only make an appointment if they meet these criteria.
“Given the expected high demand, we are asking anyone eligible for vaccination who may have had COVID-19 in the past 90 days, or anyone who can continue to stay home safely without visitors , to wait a little longer to register for an appointment, ”said Dr Borenstein.
Health workers in phase 1a can still be vaccinated and can continue to make appointments. More than 11,000 people in phase 1a have been vaccinated locally.
