Indiana is set to hire Georgia defensive back coach Charlton Warren as defensive coordinator, sources told ESPN.

Warren will replace Kane Wommack, who left last month to become the head coach of Southern Alabama. His hiring will be finalized in the coming days, sources said.

Warren, who turned 44 on Sunday, has spent the last two seasons in Georgia. He served as a defensive coordinator with the Air Force, his alma mater, from 2008 to 2013. In addition to Georgia, Warren coached defensive backs in Nebraska, North Carolina, Tennessee and Florida. Originally from Georgia, Warren played a defensive role in the Air Force from 1996 to 1998 before spending seven years of active service in the US Air Force. He began his coaching career with the Air Force in 2005.

Michigan State Assistant Mike Tressel and Liberty Defensive Coordinator Scott Symons were both among those considered in Indiana, sources said.

Indiana finished No.12 in the latest AP poll after going 6-2 in 2020. The program has made significant progress in defense under Wommack and head coach Tom Allen in recent seasons.
