This bot turns Reddit drama into Ace Attorney showdowns

Drama is no stranger to Reddit, as many of you may know. And although more than a Few snickered or giggled at Reddit arguments that exploded or took strange twists and turns, now there’s a new way to check what’s going on in comments.

Micah Price, Software Engineer from Cape Town, South Africa, Sunday unveiled a bot genius which turns Reddit arguments into scenes of Lawyer Ace, the Capcom series In which lawyer Phoenix Wright fights to get his clients off the hook using his investigator and courtroom skills, Mashable reported. Video arguments come with dramatic music and the famous “Objection!” slogan. The results are entertaining, hilariousand honestly sometimes do not doe meaning. There are, of course, some elicit a dismayed “Oh my God” when you see what people are arguing about.

In an interview with MashablePrice said he came up with the idea for other memes-based videos from the game on YouTube.

“Dramatic music is great,” Price said at point of sale, “especially for melodramatic debates on Reddit.”

According to the Price bot video posted on YouTube, the bot looks for the most common users in the comment string, then loops all comments in their string. A neural network then pchecks if the tone of the comment is negative or positive. If the comment is deemed negative, it will raise an “Objection!” Meanwhile, a comment deemed positive would elicit a happy expression. The bot, which takes around 10 minutes to respond, will then make a video based on the comments and send it to the user in a link on Reddit.

Now let’s move on to the big question everyone is concerned about: can you use it? The bot can be used by anyone on Reddit who types “! Objectionbot “or”! Objection-bot ”in the comments. There is one catch though: the subreddit you post to must be on the bot’s supported subtitle list, which you can see. here. If your preferred subdirectory for arguing isn’t listed, Price takes suggestions on which ones he should add.

The bot took about three days to complete, Price said, adding that he used Python as well as computer vision and machine learning libraries in development. It is open-source and can be found at GitHub. Shortly after its launch, the bot was “uber buggy,” he says. In fact, according to the bot’s user page, u / objection-bot, it broke for a few hours when Price fell asleep. He corrected it later, and the bot reports that is, “back and running for now.”
