There’s no question what the Las Vegas Raiders must be trying to accomplish in the first round of the April 2021 draft.
The Raiders, who own the No. 17 pick, are in dire need of impact defensive players, especially on the defensive line. Ideally, the Raiders will come out of the first round with a superior pass rusher that can begin to transform the defense.
When hired earlier this month, new Las Vegas defensive coordinator Gus Bradley said he wanted to build the unit from front to back. So this is a big clue on which the Raiders will look to add impact for the 2021 season.
Using Daniel Jeremiah from the NFL Media Simulation Project (things will change in the next three months), it looks like the Raiders are in danger of missing out on the top passing throwers in this draft. The leading player in Jeremiah’s simulation is Gregory Rosseau of Miami, No.14 with the Minnesota Vikings, and fellow Miami pass Jaelan Phillips goes to the Arizona Cardinals with a pick ahead of the Raiders in the 16th. If these are the top two passer, the Raiders should try to get one.
According to Jeremiah, the best defensive talent is at the cornerback. The Raiders have invested so much in the draft for that position, they probably won’t make a move for the top talent out there.
But if the Raiders can make a trade to jump into the 13-16 range, it can be a smart move.
At No.17 there are no things for sure and the Raiders need to score with that pick. So a little upward movement for Rousseau or Phillips may be something to consider.
