CENTRAL POINT, Ore. – A Phase 1A immunization clinic and educators shut down registration after exceeding the number of available COVID-19 vaccine doses, Jackson County officials said.
The three-day event started on Thursday and officials say it was a huge success. At the start of the clinic, Asante had allocated a total of 6,000 doses of the vaccine to eligible participants, and more than 2,500 were administered on Thursday alone.
Jackson County issued an urgent statement Thursday afternoon, warning staff were seeing a number of people arriving at the event who were not eligible under the guidelines. Spokeswoman Tanya Phillips said many were seniors who had mistakenly heard they could get vaccinated, although the state postponed immunization of the elderly until February.
Regardless, the number of eligible people arriving after registering online – and preparing with the necessary documents – has impressed officials.
Asante had updated its website on Friday morning to indicate that the event is now closed to further registrations. A similar clinic in Josephine County is scheduled to open on Sunday and registration is still open.
Chris Pizzi, chief executive of Providence, told NewsWatch 12 that the medical provider has made 3,500 additional doses available to ensure all eligible and enrolled people can be vaccinated by the end of the clinic on Saturday.
Who is eligible for the Jackson County Clinic
Phase 1a
- Group 1: Hospitals, emergency care, skilled nursing and memory care facility Health personnel (HCP) and residents, tribal health programs, emergency medical service providers (EMS) and other first responders, interpreters health care workers, traditional health workers.
- Group 2: Other long-term care facilities, including healthcare professionals and residents of residential care facilities, adult foster homes, group homes for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, other group care sites, palliative care programs, mobile crisis care and related services, individuals working in a correctional setting.
- Group 3: Outpatient HCP serving specific high-risk groups, day treatment services, non-urgent medical transport (NEMT), caregivers of children or medically fragile adults living at home.
- Group 4: All other ambulatory PCHs and public health sites.
Phase 1B (partial)
- Child care, preschool, K-12, and school district staff only.
