A new vaccination site with the capacity to deliver up to 5,000 vaccinations per week opened in Mountain View on Friday.
The Mountain View community center vaccination site is reserved for appointments and will gradually begin services to avoid appointment delays.
Officials say it will increase rapidly to deliver up to 1,000 shots per day.
“Convenience is essential,” said Joe Simitian, supervisor for Santa Clara County, whose district includes Mountain View. “The more places we have that serve people where they live and work, the more likely it is that we will be able to slow the tide of the virus.”
The new vaccination site is a collaboration between the county, which will operate the site, and city staff who will support it.
Currently, vaccines are available to healthcare workers, residents of long-term care facilities, and people 75 years of age and older. As more vaccines arrive in the county, eligibility will increase, county officials said.
But city and county officials said the new site was a step in the right direction.
County Director Jeff Smith said the new site will “add much needed capacity” to the county and build on its existing capacity in San Jose and Gilroy.
The new vaccination site is now accepting appointments and will be open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at 201 S. Rengstorff Ave.

County appointments are available to all eligible county residents and employees. However, those with private health insurance are encouraged to get vaccinated through their health care provider due to the limited vaccine supply in the county.
