quick takes on every game

ATHENS – Georgian football seems to have finally taken a break from looking at the SEC schedule released on Wednesday, especially if the Bulldogs can get started quickly.

Georgia’s first “Game of the Year” Top 5 showdown with Clemson on September 4 in Charlotte has been on the ledger for some time, but there were questions about how the rest of the schedule could fall.

It turns out that trainer Kirby Smart and his Bulldogs have one of the easiest schedules in recent program history.

The West Division’s crossover games are at home against a team from Arkansas who will replace their veteran quarterback, and at Auburn against a new coaching staff.

Here’s a rundown of the schedule with a quick reflection on each game:

Clemson (September 4): A win here in Charlotte keeps Georgia in the Top 5 and opens the door for a playoff bid even without a SEC Championship win.

UAB (September 11): The Blazers dismiss 17 starters from the Conference USA title squad, but the program’s all-time leader came through with two receivers for all conferences.

South Carolina (September 18): No one is saying Shane Beamer is over his head in first year. Again. Having Will Muschamp around helps.

At Vanderbilt (September 25): Expect the Commodores to show up for their game against Georgia this time around. Expect Kirby Smart to remember that they didn’t last time around.

Arkansas (October 2): Turn on that Sanford Stadium jukebox (or audio system) and turn on last year’s game movie. The Bulldogs won’t forget the Hogs this time around.

In Auburn (October 9): Bryan Harsin is a good sneaky employee, as are coordinators Mike Bobo and Derek Mason. This could be the hardest SEC game.

Kentucky (October 16): Several key players are returning, including preseason All-American tackle Darian Kinnard and RB star Chris Rodriquez. If Kentucky ever resolves the QB position, it could pose a threat.

In Florida (October 30): Both teams have goodbye ahead of the annual Florida Home State game. It’s hard to imagine another Gators attack as beautiful as last year.

Missouri (November 6): Mizzou thinks he’s got something special about QB Connor Bazelak with a solid receiving body, but a new DC and the loss of LB star Nick Bolton raise questions.

In Tennessee (November 13): Flights could still sort things out by November under new coach Josh Heupel, but quarterback Harrison Bailey provides talent worth building.

Charleston Southern (November 20): Lost to South Carolina 72-10 in 2019. This Big South FCS school plays the four-game spring schedule, opening March 13 at Kennesaw State.

To Georgia Tech (November 27): UGA is looking to get in and out of this lopsided competition without injuries or suspensions en route to the SEC Championship game next week.

SEC Championship Game (December 4): Nick Saban is around 25-0 against former assistants entering this one. Wondering how Kirby will answer that question this year?
