Sure The COVID-19 vaccine and the black community: a special Tyler Perry, which aired Thursday on BET, influential actor and director Tyler Perry sat down for a conversation about the new Moderna and Pfizer vaccines and the concern many people in the black community have about getting them.
“I know there is a lot of reluctance to take this vaccine, and I got a call from Brady Health System, one of the major hospitals here in Georgia, asking if I would take the vaccine to show you to. all that it is safe. Well, when that question came to me, I was like, “I have a lot of questions, and I know you have a lot of questions too,” Perry said.
“My goal and my purpose here today is to tell you about this vaccine. I want that to be perfectly clear, I don’t want anybody to take it because I take it. What I want to do is give you the information, the facts. There is a lot of misinformation out there.
Perry invited two experts to sit down with him – infectious disease specialist Dr Carlos del Rio and professor of medicine Kimberly Manning – to answer all of his questions so he could decide to take the vaccine by then. end of the 30-minute commercial. special free.
Two of the biggest questions skeptics ask about the vaccine are: what are the immediate side effects and what are the long-term safety risks?
To answer these questions, Dr del Rio pointed out that the mRNA technology used in the COVID-19 vaccine is not new, it has already been used for more than two years in the Ebola vaccine. As for the long-term effects, del Rio said most of the side effects “occurred within the first two months of the vaccine. So if you have a problem with the vaccine, you are going to see it very early on. You don’t tend to see it six months, a year, two years later.
Perry also learned that it may still be possible to contract COVID-19 after receiving the vaccine, but it has been shown to be 100% effective in preventing a person from getting sick enough to end up in the ICU. .
“What we think can happen, because the virus is still circulating after you receive the two doses of the vaccine, because you are still going to see the virus, but you are not going to get sick, every time you see the virus it ‘ is almost like getting a booster shot. It’s almost like you get a new booster that it’s still there, so your immune system is constantly reminded that there’s something there, and it’s almost like getting a new vaccination stimulus, ” said del Rio.
Perry asked, “Does that mean when you have the vaccine you can still get the virus?” Del Rio replied, “That’s a very good question. We do not know yet. We think no, but we don’t know. And that’s why we tell people, once you get the vaccine, until we have that data, the studies have been done to find out if the vaccine has kept you from getting sick. And they were really good at preventing it. So far, it’s 100% effective in keeping you from getting really sick, like ending up in intensive care.
In the end, Perry shared that one of the main reasons he wanted to get the shot was that there was no way of knowing whether or not he could be one of the critically ill. So by the end of the episode, Perry had made up his mind – he would take the vaccine.
“Having said that, I will definitely take this vaccine. I have a clear understanding now. I am ready to take it now, and I hope more people will take this information and make their own choices and decisions for improving our health. So thanks for watching this. By bringing these experts together here, I was hoping that something was said that will inspire you to do what is best for you and your family. Again, I don’t recommend that you do this, but I really hope you consider everything that has been said here today, ”Perry concluded, before receiving the vaccine on camera. After the injection, Perry surprisingly said, “I didn’t feel it, there you go! I had the vaccine. Here we go.”
