The article on PoliticoBiden’s website is titled, “‘It’s a Mess’: Biden’s First 10 Days Dominated by Vaccine Mysteries.” Now everyone loves a mystery. I have a weakness for The Hardy Boys and Sherlock holmes, myself. But detectives working at the White House cannot solve the mystery of the 20 million missing doses of COVID-19 vaccine that have been sent to states but have so far not been found.
It was the president who would bring jurisdiction back to the White House. Instead, his people have created a cluster of gigantic proportions.
Politico:
After a week of work, Biden’s team is still trying to locate more than 20 million doses of the vaccine that have been sent to states – a mystery that has hampered plans to speed up the national immunization effort. They are looking for new ways to increase the production of a vaccine stock that they have found to be nearly empty. And they’re nervously eyeing a slew of new strains of Covid-19 that threaten to derail the response.
“This is the quote from Mike Tyson: ‘Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth,’ said one person with knowledge of the vaccination efforts and who is not authorized to discuss the job. “They plan. They are competent. It’s just the weight of everything when you sit in that chair. It’s heavy.”
Maybe the job is a little more difficult than it seemed since the election campaign. This is especially true when it comes to government bureaucrats. They don’t care who is president as long as they can retain their power and authority. It creates a complicated mess when the greedy beavers of the new administration want to start implementing all of their grandiose plans while entrenched bureaucrats are on Washington time.
Only a small percentage of people not counted for doses – around 2 million, two officials said – are due to delays in reporting the data, Biden’s team believes. That would mean that the rest of the crucial supply is locked in warehouses, idle in freezers, or floating elsewhere in the complex distribution pipeline that runs from administration to individual states.
It’s a dilemma that preceded the arrival of Team Biden, with Biden himself calling the first weeks of the vaccine rollout under the Trump administration a “dismal failure.”
Yet the response team underestimated from the start how difficult it would be to resolve.
Any plan initiated by either president would have been plagued by organizational problems, bureaucratic red tape, incompetence and wasted time. In this case, you have 100 million doses of vaccine transferred from the federal bureaucracy to 50 state bureaucracies.
What could possibly go wrong?
The Biden administration has since warned that supplies will remain limited until the summer, raising the possibility of persistent shortages even as the country’s daily immunization rate increases.
The White House on Friday applauded promising data on a new single-dose vaccine from Johnson & Johnson. But obstacles to production have dampened expectations for its immediate impact, with one federal official likening the anticipated flow of shots to “a trickle.”
How long Biden can blame Trump for the mess is unclear. The media will try to cover it, but the bottom line is that Biden’s “plan” to deal with the pandemic fell apart once it hit reality. This probably means it will be well into the fall before we can really get back to normal.
