Social media was on fire with wild speculation that a fallen meteorite allegedly landed in a school playground in far north Queensland, NASA was reportedly called in to investigate. But all was not what it seemed.

A slew of anecdotes and theories emerged online, as people scrambled for more information. However, it didn’t take long for amateur astronomers to be somewhat disappointed to discover the true, much more mundane origins of “space rock”.

“We have received all kinds of inquiries from all over the world”, Malanda State School principal Mark Allen said before breaking the real news that the viral meteorite strike on his playground was actually a school project.

Allen described the exercise as a “little fun” in which the students of the school were invited to “report” on a meteorite landing as part of a mission that tasked them with interviewing witnesses and emergency services at the scene, someone reportedly decided to take the initiative and take the case to The NASA.

“The local police loved getting involved so that the school and the children would make it more realistic”, Daniel Moss, local resident, explained. “It’s a small town, they weren’t expecting it [the school project] go viral. “
