NORTH BRANFORD, CT – A coronavirus outbreak involving the highly contagious strain from the UK has been linked to a large family gathering in North Branford, officials said on Monday.
The outbreak led to the quarantine of the North Branford High School hockey team.
“As positive COVID-19 cases have declined since the sharp increase after the holidays, we need to remind our residents to remain vigilant, especially in light of the COVID-19 variant that is now present in Connecticut,” Michael Pascucilla, director of public health for the East Shore District Health Department, said in a statement.
He added that it should serve as a reminder for people to reconsider their plans for Super Bowl gatherings this weekend and St. Patrick’s Day next month.
“We’re in a position where we’re starting to see some hope with the number of vaccinations on the rise,” Pascucilla said. “While we thank our community for their help in following COVID-19 precautions, we will only be successful if everyone remains diligent in following the recommendations to slow the spread of the virus. These measures will help protect our community against a generalized epidemic. . “
He stressed the importance of social distancing, wearing a mask, and limiting interactions with people outside your home.
The news came as coronavirus infection rates plummeted in the state and Governor Ned Lamont eased some restrictions.
On Monday, the state reported 3,941 new cases of coronavirus, 73 deaths and a positive test rate of 3.86% in the past three days. The seven-day average rate of positive tests fell below 4% for the first time in months, Lamont said.
Lamont said on Monday he would remove the 100-person cap for religious ceremonies and push back the restaurant’s curfew from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m.
