The United States could face a fourth wave of COVID-19 infections unless certain precautions are taken now, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the country’s leading infectious disease specialist, said on MSNBC. All with Chris Hayes Tuesday evening.
Although new cases of COVID-19 are on the decline – the country’s seven-day average has declined steadily since early January – Fauci said it was too early to say that widespread immunity to the novel coronavirus had been achieved . “I don’t think there are enough people in any given location who have been infected enough to say that herd immunity has entered,” Fauci said. “I don’t think we’re there yet.” Read on – and to ensure your health and the health of others, don’t miss these sure signs that you’ve had coronavirus before.
“One of the jokers”
The country has seen peaks and declines in COVID-19 cases since the discovery of the coronavirus 13 months ago. Hayes asked Fauci if the United States should prepare for a “fourth wave” of COVID. “I think if we consistently and consistently doubled public health measures at the same time as we gradually increase the number of people getting vaccinated, we shouldn’t be seeing this,” Fauci said.
However, Fauci called the recently discovered COVID-19 mutations “one of the wild cards.”
“We have to keep an eye out for transfers,” Fauci said. “If they become dominant, then that could lead to another push.”

Experts have expressed concerns about mutated forms of the virus which appear to originate from the UK, Brazil and South Africa; all three have been identified in the United States. They can be more transmissible and deadly than the original strain of COVID-19, and can, at least to some extent, evade the immunity provided by previous infection or current coronavirus vaccines.
“The best way to stop them from becoming dominant is to double down on public health measures… hide, move away, avoid gathering places, et cetera,” Fauci said. At the same time, he added, as many people should get the COVID vaccine as possible.
“We must continue to monitor mutations,” he reiterated, “because if they become dominant, that could be a problem.”
