Several airlines create mask warrant exemptions following CDC order

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – The CDC ended January on a mask mandate for people traveling on airlines and public transportation. If the order of the masks is not followed, you could also see a fine.

Several airlines in the United States now allow certain passengers to fly without a mask if they meet certain conditions. American Airlines and Alaska Airlines customers will be required to wear masks during travel unless they meet certain criteria that allow them to be exempt from the warrant.

According to their website, American Airlines says customers are required to wear masks for the duration of their trip, including at the airport and on the plane. Children under two will continue to be exempt from the requirement to wear a mask.

For customers with disabilities who cannot wear a mask, American asks them to notify the airline’s special assistance team at least 72 hours before departure to request an exemption.

The exemptions will require:

  • Documentation from a licensed healthcare provider,
  • Proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within three calendar days of departure or proof of recovery from COVID-19.

American Airlines has also updated its guidelines on acceptable types of masks and will ban bandanas and gaiters. You can read more about American Airlines’ requirements here.

Alaska Airlines is another airline with exemptions from the mask requirement. The airline will require passengers to wear masks at all times during travel, including the flight, when embarking and disembarking, and while passing through an airport.

If you have a disability and cannot wear a mask, you can call the airlines at least five days before your flight to request an exemption from the mask requirement.

The exemptions will require:

  • Documentation from a licensed health care provider regarding your inability to wear a mask due to your disability; and
  • Evidence of a negative result from an FDA approved Covid-19 molecular NAAT or PCR test, performed within 72 hours of your flight’s scheduled departure.
