The Director General of the Ghana Standards Authority, Professor Alexander Dodoo, recalled how members of the medical fraternity were reprimanded years ago for an alleged cure for HIV.
Ghanaweb monitored his submissions on Joy FM’s Newsfile show on Saturday, February 7; where he shared his expertise on the fight against coronaviruses in Ghana – addressing among others the issue of the use of hydrogen peroxide and vaccination.
Regarding the controversies surrounding the medical findings, he said: “… this problem is not new to Ghana, in the early 2000s someone told us that goat serum cured HIV and most of it. between us were toasted saying that no matter what evidence you have, it must be evaluated independently, impartially and scientifically.
“The advice is that when it comes to its use (of hydrogen peroxide) for the treatment of COVID, the answer is no. It is a very good antiseptic, it can be used by dentists and others who know how to mix it and use it, but for the community in general a lot of advice is needed, ”he stressed. .
His position calling for caution on the use of hydrogen peroxide was unanimously endorsed by the rest of the group. They all urged the scientific community to redouble their efforts to test the effectiveness of the solution for treating and / or curing the coronavirus.
So what exactly was the treatment for HIV with goat serum?
In September 2005, senior officials leading the fight against HIV / AIDS in Ghana rejected claims that a goat serum tested in Ghana offered hope to people living with HIV / AIDS (PLWA).
The officials, led by Professor Fred Sai, the government adviser on HIV / AIDS, said no conclusive clinical tests had been performed on the product. They referred to a media report on the virtues of the serum describing the report as false and amounting to a deception of the population.
The dismissal referred to an article published in the September 6 edition of the Daily Graphic titled: “Hope for people living with HIV / AIDS – New serum tested here works”.
“We are a long way from starting to hope … we are a long way from turning product into medicine,” Prof Sai said at a busy press conference. The Daily Graphic had reported that goat serum could suppress and neutralize strains of HIV-2 in goats.
However, authorities at the Noguchi Memorial and Medical Institute (NMIMR) at the time confirmed that the tests carried out showed that the product could react with the HIV-2 strain in goats, but the test was still preliminary.
Professor Sai said that although Ghana has reputable institutions and scientists, the goat serum promoters refused to allow the product to undergo “rigorous scientific testing”.
