A 78-year-old woman has died after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine at Cal Poly Pomona, but her death is believed to be unrelated to the vaccine, health officials said on Saturday. The woman died on Friday, according to Kaiser Permanente, who runs the vaccination site on the Pomona campus.

“(The patient) received an injection of the COVID-19 vaccine made by Pfizer around noon. While sitting in the viewing area after the injection, the patient complained of feeling uncomfortable and upon assessment by medical staff, she lost consciousness, ”said Dr Michael Morris. , physician director of the Kaiser Permanente Southern California COVID-19 vaccination program.

Reluctance to vaccines in the black and brown community is giving many in the most vulnerable populations a break before signing up for a COVID-19 vaccine. Doctors Jubril Oyeyemi and David Hayes-Bautista discuss how to fight vaccine fear in these communities.

“The paramedics on site began CPR almost immediately and continued, but ultimately she could not be resuscitated. His cause of death has not been determined; however, there were no signs or symptoms of a severe allergic or anaphylactic reaction. Her family said she had a history of heart disease, ”Morris continued.

The woman was accompanied by her 57-year-old husband, who also received a vaccine. Kaiser officials said despite the tragedy, he still intended to receive his second dose of the vaccine within a few weeks. Kaiser said the site will remain open and vaccinations will continue as long as supplies are available.
