A 90-year-old woman is said to have gone through a snowstorm to receive her first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, the Seattle Times reports.

What happened?

Fran Goldman drove 10 km round trip in the snow in Seattle to get the vaccine, according to the Seattle Times.

  • Goldman decided to go to his date after struggling to get one.
  • “I called to get an appointment anywhere, every morning, every afternoon and often I was online at night,” Goldman said.

According to NBC News, she finally found a date Sunday morning. However, a powerful winter storm swept through Seattle on Friday and Saturday causing 1 foot of snow to fall in the area.

  • Goldman still walked to the appointment for the vaccine “in fleece pants and a short-sleeved shirt so the nurse could reach his arm easily,” according to NBC News. She also wore a fleece jacket, a down coat, and a rain jacket to protect herself from the elements.

Goldman eventually received the vaccination, according to the Associated Press. The entire ordeal surprised her daughter, Ruth Goldman, who lives in Buffalo, New York.

  • “We are outside people,” she says. “We love to be outside. I was at Lake Ontario yesterday with a 6 degree wind chill.

Vaccines and winter storms

Coronavirus vaccine shipments will experience “widespread delays” due to winter storms plaguing much of the country, the Washington Post reports. The winter weather conditions slowed the distribution of the vaccine, which upset the scheduled appointments. There will also be problems with monitoring vaccine storage sites, the Washington Post reports.

  • “Due to the harsh winter conditions that are currently affecting much of the country, the US government anticipates widespread delays in shipments and deliveries of COVID-19 vaccines over the next few days,” Kristen Nordlund, spokesperson for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told the Washington Post.
