Hawaii Department of Health officials today reported one new coronavirus-related death in Oahu and 29 new infections, bringing the state’s total since the start of the pandemic to 427 deaths and 26,935 cases.
The latest death was a man in his 60s, who had underlying conditions and was hospitalized when he died.
The state’s official coronavirus death toll includes 341 deaths in Oahu, 53 on the island of Hawaii, 29 in Maui, one in Kauai, and three Hawaii residents who died out of state.
Health officials said the state only had 17 new viral infections on Tuesday, but clarified later today that the low number was due to an issue with “electronic lab reports.” The problem continued with today’s count. They said they expected a “rebound effect” with a higher daily number of cases in the days to come.
The coronavirus-related death toll in the United States was around 489,000 today, and the number of infections nationwide is over 27.8 million.
The new cases of infection reported today by the statewide health department include 17 in Oahu, nine in Maui, one on the Big Island and two residents diagnosed outside of Hawaii, officials said.
Statistics released today reflect new cases of infection reported to the department on Monday.
The total number of coronavirus cases per island since the start of the epidemic is 21,650 in Oahu, 2,217 in Hawaii County, 1959 in Maui, 179 in Kauai, 108 in Lanai and 27 in Molokai. There are also 795 Hawaii residents who have been diagnosed out of state. As a result of updated information, an out-of-state case has been reclassified to Oahu, officials said today.
Health officials also said today that of the state’s total number of infections, 810 cases are considered active. Officials say they regard infections reported in the past 14 days as a “surrogate number for active cases.” The number of active cases in the state has fallen by 40 today.
Per island, Oahu has 598 active cases, Maui has 171, the Big Island has 37, Lanai has two, and Kauai and Molokai have one, according to the state’s latest tally.
Health officials counted 2,184 new COVID-19 test results in today’s tally, for a statewide positivity rate of 1.3%. The state’s 7-day average positivity rate is 1%, according to the Hawaii COVID-19 Data Dashboard.
Of all confirmed cases of infection in Hawaii, 1,804 required hospitalizations, with four new hospitalizations in Oahu reported today by state health officials.
Four statewide hospitalizations are residents of Hawaii who were diagnosed and treated out of state. Of the 1,800 hospitalizations in the state, 1,574 were in Oahu, 113 in Maui, 100 in Big Island, 7 in Kauai, 5 in Lanai, and 1 in Molokai.
According to the latest information from the department’s Hawaii COVID-19 Data dashboard, a total of 39 patients infected with the virus were in hospitals in Hawaii this morning, including 12 in intensive care units and 8 on ventilators.
Lt. Gov. Josh Green said today that 268,428 vaccines have been administered out of the 315,900 received by the state. Green said about 12% of the general population had received at least one dose of the vaccine.
State officials release updated vaccination numbers verified every Wednesday.
Oahu moved to the less restrictive Level 2 of Honolulu’s four-tier economic stimulus package on October 22. . To move to level 3 of level 2, the 7-day average of new cases must be less than 50 on two consecutive Wednesdays. In addition, the average 7-day positivity rate must be less than 2.5% on these two Wednesdays.
Today, the seven-day average number of cases for Oahu is 33 and the seven-day average positivity rate is 1.2%, according to Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi. It was the first Wednesday that both numbers were below the threshold to move to level 3, but it is not clear whether the issue with the Department of Health lab reporting today and Tuesday will affect the decision to the city to relax restrictions.
