San Diego County health officials said on Wednesday that vaccinations for teachers and other essential workers will begin on Saturday as most seniors have been given a dose and appointments are opening.
Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said vaccinations are being extended to the next group in Phase 1B, which includes teachers, school staff, educators, emergency service personnel, and food and agriculture workers .
Fletcher, who spoke at the county’s weekly press conference, said there were around 500,000 people in the next group and warned that it will be some time before dates are over. easy to plan.
“There won’t be half a million appointments available on Saturday,” he said. “So we need people to be patient.”
Fletcher said the county is keeping 20% of the new doses in reserve to immunize teachers and staff from kindergarten to grade 12. These meetings will be scheduled in school districts.
Anyone else in the next Phase 1B category can schedule an appointment through the county’s online list of vaccination sites or at state MyTurn.ca.gov.
Fletcher said 68% of the county’s seniors have received at least one dose and the county will continue to encourage them to get the shot.
He said as the county opens up vaccinations, Cal Fire teams will be dispatched to farming areas to vaccinate hard-to-reach groups.
So far, a total of 526,242 county residents have received at least one dose and 196,079 people – 7.3 percent of the population – are fully vaccinated.
“Even with the disruptions over the past few weeks in vaccine availability and supply, we are getting vaccines into the guns at a very impressive rate,” Fletcher said.
He expressed optimism that vaccine shipments would resume later this week and would soon be supplemented with a new single-dose vaccine from Johnson & Johnson.
