San Luis Obispo County received its first shipment of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine.
County public health officials say 1,400 doses of the vaccine will be reallocated to some local pharmacies for administration. Meanwhile, the county’s three public vaccination clinics will continue to administer Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.
The Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which received emergency use clearance from the Food and Drug Administration last week, only requires a single dose. Pfizer and Moderna vaccines require two injections.
“From the start, our biggest challenge has been the limited supply of vaccines,” said Dr Penny Borenstein, county health officer. “The addition of a third vaccine manufacturer means residents of SLO County will be able to get their shots as quickly as possible.”
San Luis Obispo County is currently vaccinating healthcare workers and residents 65 and older. To register for an appointment, click here. Vaccine appointments are also available at several local pharmacies.
Some local child care workers and K-12 teachers and staff working in person can now receive the COVID-19 vaccine in SLO County. Health officials say these appointments are scheduled by the county education office and the childcare planning board.
In Santa Barbara County, public health officials expect to receive 3,800 doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine next week. These doses would be distributed among county health care providers and used at some public health vaccination sites.
Santa Barbara County is currently vaccinating healthcare workers, residents 65 years of age and older, and workers in education / child care, food / agriculture, and emergency services. For more details on how to make an appointment, click here.
