San Luis Obispo County opens eligibility for COVID-19 vaccination appointments to more residents.

As of now, workers in food and agriculture, emergency services, education and child care, as well as people aged 16 to 64 with certain conditions. high-risk medical conditions or disabilities and caregivers providing home care to elderly or medically vulnerable residents can sign up for an appointment.

Public health officials estimate this will make about 40,000 additional residents of SLO County eligible for the vaccine.

Health officials say residents who are eligible based on their job will need to show ID and a recent pay stub to verify their employment. Those who qualify due to a health condition or disability will be asked to self-attest to their specific condition.

Healthcare workers and people 65 and over have been eligible for vaccine appointments for some time. Education and childcare workers have also recently been made eligible, but only through appointments made through their employers.

County health official Dr Penny Borenstein told a press conference Wednesday afternoon that the change comes as the public health department noticed a drop in demand for vaccines in previously areas eligible.

Health officials say the county has enough vaccines to deliver the first 5,500 doses next week at county vaccination clinics in Arroyo Grande, Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo.
