A bill from the legislature’s judiciary committee would legalize medical marijuana, but Senator Anna Wishart (D) said on Wednesday that the Senate would not have the final say, The Associated Press reported.
Wishart said those who advocate for the legalization of marijuana will push for a voting measure if the state does not pass the legislation.
“It is dangerous to bypass the established process that we need to determine if the drugs are safe and effective and why legalizing marijuana and bypassing the regulatory process to keep people safe is dangerous and will harm our children,” said the governor .
A measure to legalize marijuana was going to be on the ballot last year, but the Nebraska Supreme Court stripped it down due to a rule against grouping multiple questions into a single yes-no question. The measure included the subjects of rights to use and grow marijuana as well as how to regulate it.
Lawyers believe they have revised the measure so that the court accepts it on the ballot, according to the Associated Press.
A growing number of states have passed legislation legalizing medical or recreational marijuana.
A bill was successful in February in Virginia that will legalize recreational marijuana use in the state in 2024.
