(WXYZ) – The state of Michigan announced on Friday it was expanding vaccine eligibility to all people 16 years of age and older starting April 5, about a month ahead of the target President Joe announced Thursday Biden.

With this, the White House and the state of Michigan have teamed up to open a major new community vaccination site at Ford Field in Detroit with the goal of administering 6,000 COVID-19 injections per day.
It will be open 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., seven days a week for eight weeks as part of the federal government’s pilot immunization program. The goal is to provide 5,000 vaccinations per day on site and 1,000 more per day via the mobile option. It will open on March 24.

The state has updated its COVID-19 vaccination schedule. Currently, people aged 50 and over with chronic health conditions can be vaccinated. It will extend to every 50 years and over on March 22. Also on March 22, people aged 16 to 49 with disabilities and pre-existing conditions.

The state began vaccinating healthcare workers in December 2020 and then expanding it to residents of long-term care facilities. To kick off the new year, people aged 75 and over and others like teachers, first responders, correctional staff and more were able to get immunized. This then spread to people aged 65 to 74, before spreading again to people aged 50 to 64 with pre-existing conditions.
The state said it expects it could take several weeks after April 5 for anyone who wants to be vaccinated to have an appointment.
