Coinciding with the announcement of the second generation Nest Hub, the Google Home app has been updated with improved features for the Nest Wifi family of devices. From the update, you can now access a new “Speed and Usage” section in Network Information, with graphics for individual devices as well as for the network as a whole.
These Nest Wifi usage charts were previously a big omission for the Google Home app. This information was only available in the old Google Wifi client, which is now ready to be discontinued. Last year, Home added advanced WiFi settings and the ability to import from existing networks.
A new report came out this week suggesting that far fewer Pixel owners will buy a Pixel as their next phone, dropping from 84% to 65.2%. In contrast, according to the same report, 92% of iPhone owners surveyed said they would buy another iPhone as their next smartphone.
Honestly, it’s not that hard to see why these numbers have dropped. Google’s Pixel lineup over the past couple of years has seen some rough spots, with the Pixel 4’s very low battery endurance and the confusing lineup that is the Pixel 4a, 4a 5G, and Pixel 5. With the company’s 2020 phones , We did not do it. We do have some major complaints about the quality of Google’s newer phones, but the lack of larger XL models and a stagnant although still competitive camera will certainly cause some users to look elsewhere.
One of the most anticipated wearable devices of this year is the OnePlus Watch, which at one point was rumored to run on Google’s Wear OS platform. Instead, OnePlus’ Pete Lau detailed some aspects of the upcoming watch, including that it will run on ‘RTOS’ instead of Wear OS, for battery life reasons and more. .
Lau further explains that the OnePlus Watch has a “stunning, burden-free design” as well as connectivity to OnePlus smartphones and TVs. A report released earlier today mentioned that the watch can be used as a remote control for Android TVs. Apparently, all of this will also come for an “affordable” price.
Android fans had a lot to look forward to this week, as Google rolled out the second version of Android 12 Developer Preview. We’ve carefully put together all of the changes big and small that can be found in the update, and have put the most important together in a video as well.
One of the most immediately noticeable changes to Android 12 on Pixel phones is that the dark theme is significantly lighter than before. On Android 11, the dark theme for Google Pixel phones is “AMOLED black,” but Android 12 now uses a medium gray that resembles the shade used in the dark mode of various Google apps.
Why this sudden change? We are not entirely sure. Google has proclaimed that even gray themes can save battery on OLED screens compared to white, so it stands to reason that a lighter gray would reduce battery savings. It’s an odd choice, but like I said, I like how it looks.
