Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the United States National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told CBS’s Face the Nation on Sunday that while Covid-19 variants play a role in recent spikes in numbers of cases, they are not the only reasons.
“The variants play a role, but it’s not completely the variants,” Fauci said. “What we’re probably seeing is because of things like spring break and the removal of the mitigation methods you’ve seen now that several states have done this, I think it’s premature.”
Fauci added that there is a risk that as the numbers go down from a high and reach a point where new case numbers start to level off, if “you stay at that plateau you are really in danger of falling. ‘a skyrocketing, and unfortunately that’s what we’re starting to see. ”
