An overview of the situation of COVID-19 cases and vaccines in Michigan as the new week approaches. (This was originally published in the Morning Report Newsletter – register here or using the form below.)
Hello and have a good Monday.
Hope you had a great weekend and a great vacation, if you are partying! Welcome to the last days of March. There are a lot of things going on, as usual, so here are a few things to watch out for this week.
COVID Surge: New cases of COVID-19 are on the rise again in Michigan and an increase in hospitalizations is being felt, this time among a younger age group. Inpatient data collected by the Michigan Health & Hospital Association (MHA) shows that hospitalizations have increased by 633% for adults aged 30 to 39 and by 800% for adults aged 40 to 49. The 7-day average of new cases and positive test rates are at their highest since December.

It’s hard to see how it would slow down one way or another this week. There aren’t many restrictions in place yet, other than mask mandates and some capacity limits. But with faster vaccinations, warming weather and COVID fatigue taking hold, we are in a race against time.
Deaths have not increased but are generally lagging behind big spikes in cases. Hopefully they stay low.
Last week Governor Whitmer said she did not intend to introduce any new restrictions, although businesses have told Local 4 they fear another lockdown period as cases mount.
Relocation of vaccinations: About 65% of Michigan residents over the age of 65 have received at least one dose of the vaccine, while about 45% are fully immunized. As of Friday, 31% of Michigan adults had received at least one dose and 18% were fully immunized. That’s an increase from around 26% last Monday – so the pace is picking up.

Ford Field opened for immunizations last week, with 13,000 appointments in the first three days. The mass vaccination site will remain open for at least the next seven weeks. (Click here to register for an appointment via Meijer). You can see the vaccination coverage by county below.

Starting April 5, all Michigan residents 16 and older will become eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.
Nationally, more than 143 million doses have been administered, with 72% of those 65 and over receiving a dose and 49% fully immunized. It is enormous. Overall, 20% of the adult population is fully vaccinated.
