Miranda Lambert recalls writing ‘Over You’ with Blake Shelton

The now divorced couple wrote the 2012 song about the death of Shelton’s brother.

Songwriters are told to write what they know, but sometimes what they know can be a little too painful to be set to music.

In a new Essentials Radio interview with Apple Music, Miranda Lambert tells the stories behind some of her greatest hits, including the painful backstory to her 2012 song “Over You,” which she co-wrote with her. ex-husband and other country superstar Blake Shelton. Shelton’s older brother Richie was killed in a car crash in 1990 at the age of 24, and when the former couple opened up about their loss, Lambert wondered if he could be cathartic about put the feelings of her then-husband into a song.

“My ex-husband, Blake, had lost a brother, and it’s one of those times when even if you’re married to someone, sometimes you find something new about them,” Lambert recalls. “Guys don’t open up about things, but he started telling me about the experience of it all. And I was like, ‘Have you ever written about this?’ … And he’s like, ‘No’ And he said to me, ‘Well my dad just said,’ You’re not getting over it. You just got used to it. ” And I thought to myself. : “Well, could we write it down? Do you want to give it a try or is it overwhelming? “
