The remaining California adults who will soon become eligible to receive the coronavirus vaccine will have to wait to make an appointment through CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid and Safeway until their specific eligibility dates in April.
President Biden said on Monday that 90% of adults in the United States would be eligible for a vaccine by April 19. The announcement came days after Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that vaccines would be available to Californians 50 years and older from April 1 and those 16 and older. to April 15.
The state is vaccinating people 65 years of age and older, healthcare workers, long-term care residents, some essential workers, and people 16 years and older who have disabilities or a health problem. underlying.
As of Monday, the registration criteria for a vaccine at CVS, RiteAid, Walgreens and Safeway reflect the state’s current eligibility requirements. People who are not currently eligible cannot register for an upcoming appointment yet.
CVS spokeswoman Monica Prinzing said vaccine eligibility on the online scheduling system will be updated when state and federal authorities change their own systems to incorporate the newly eligible groups on April 1 and 15. .
“In some cases, the change in eligibility on CVS.com can take up to 72 hours after the status update begins,” Prinzing said.
Walgreens spokeswoman Emily Delnicki did not provide a specific date by which the company will change its online eligibility.
“We strive to reflect the evolution of eligibility guidelines through our planner and in our stores, so that our pharmacists have the latest information available to ensure that the most recent guidance is applied in our practices and procedures at the store level ” , Delnicki said in a statement.
Rite Aid spokesperson Christopher Savarese confirmed that the company’s online planning tool will be updated on April 1 and April 15 to reflect state eligibility rules.
“As soon as we receive advice from the CDC and the California State Department of Health, we do updates on eligibility,” he said.
Safeway is currently prioritizing groups eligible for the vaccine and requiring individuals to show proof of eligibility on the day of their appointment. “Anyone who shows up for an appointment and is not in a qualified phase and priority level group will be denied a vaccine,” according to the company’s website.
A Safeway representative did not immediately respond to requests from The Chronicle regarding when the company is considering changing its eligibility.
People who are currently eligible but are having trouble finding an appointment can book one at a pharmacy outside of their zip code or county for all four companies.
“There are cases where patients can look for locations elsewhere in the state and outside of their local zip code that are more convenient to make an appointment,” Prinzing said.
