Zola’s first trailer is as over the top as the Twitter thread it’s based on

Social media has produced a lot of stories that sound like the truth but are full of silly twists and turns that sound too good to be true. So that was with #TheStory, a 148-part Twitter thread by Aziah “Zola” Wells King – except that her thread turned out to be a relatively true story of two women on a nightmare road trip in Florida. Last year at the Sundance Film Festival, director Janicza Bravo turned this thread into a film that dramatizes the story without losing Zola’s sardonic charm.

A24 is out now Zola in theaters this summer, and the first trailer released online today. It’s a pretty good wrap of the film, starring Taylour Paige as the semi-fictionalized A’Ziah King and Riley Keough as his volatile brother Stefani, which draws Zola into a world of trafficking after the ‘having invited to a spontaneous strip club tour. Also, don’t miss Succession Nicholas Braun – who plays Stefani’s hapless boyfriend – bragging about “schmoney”.
