Michigan’s thumb region is the latest COVID hotspot

METRO DETROIT – Coronavirus cases are climbing rapidly in Michigan, but some spots are significantly worse than others.

While the figures for the state as a whole are increasing markedly. It is important for everyone to understand where the hotspots are located in the state, especially in the metro Detroit area.

The overall situation is deteriorating but it is even more accelerated in some areas.

If you look at the cases per 100,000 people, Thumb – Michigan’s 10th district – becomes prominent. Less populated areas, such as Macomb and St. Clair counties, have extremely high transmission of COVID.

In St. Clair County, the rate of COVID tests returning positive is nearly 27% – higher than it has ever been during the winter flare. It is approaching the highest rate the county has ever seen – 28.8% in April 2020.

For comparison, the percentage of positivity in the entire condition is 13%, which is considered serious. In St. Clair County, more than one in four people test positive. The average number of new cases per million in St. Clair County is higher than it has ever been since the start of the pandemic.

The significance of the trends seen in new cases in the Detroit metro area cannot be overstated. Immunizations are clearly a critical part of our current strategy, but to slow the spread of cases, hospitalizations and deaths, everyone must do their part.
