STRAIT – The number of confirmed coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in Michigan rose to 678,295 on Thursday, including 16,141 deaths, state officials report.

Thursday’s update includes a total of 6,036 new cases and 49 additional deaths, including 33 as a result of a review of vital records. On Wednesday, the state reported a total of 672,259 cases and 16,092 deaths.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer released a statement Tuesday after White House officials announced he would increase the COVID-19 vaccine doses available for Michigan starting next week.

Next week’s shipments will increase by 66,020, bringing the total number of doses to 620,040 – a weekly record for the state, according to a press release. Officials said the allocation includes 147,800 doses of Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose vaccine.

It comes after Whitmer recently requested more vaccines as the state sees an increase in the number of COVIDs.

The CDC said Michigan led the country in new COVID-19 cases by population.

Officials on Tuesday reported 5,177 new cases of COVID and 48 additional deaths, including 20 following a vital examination. On Monday, the state reported a total of 660,771 cases and 16,034 deaths.

Local 4’s Dr Frank McGeorge said he has seen a very marked increase in the number of COVID patients at the hospital where he works.

“Many of them need to be hospitalized. I would honestly say it looks worse to me here in Southeast Michigan than it did during the wave that started in November. Now the most disturbing trend is the number of middle-aged people with severe COVID, ”McGeorge said.

All Detroiters 16 and older are now eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine, the city announced on Monday.

Any Detroit resident aged 16 or older can now call to make an appointment to get the vaccine at the TCF Center.

Appointments can be made by calling 313-230-0505. Anyone who lives outside of the city of Detroit, but reports to work in the city every day, can also book an appointment.

The Johnson & Johnson vaccination site opened at the North West 9-1 Activity Center on Saturday.

Chief Public Health Officer Denise Fair also announced that the Detroit Department of Health has been told it will receive its first Johnson and Johnson vaccine allowance this week. Detroit residents who want the single-dose J&J vaccine can call 313-230-0505 for an appointment to be received at the Northwest Activity Center, located at 18100 Meyers from 9-1 this Saturday.

The state of Michigan announced Friday that all residents aged 16 and over will become eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine on April 5, nearly a month before the May 1 date promised by President Joe Biden.

People aged 16 to 49 certain medical conditions or disabilities will qualify from March 22, when 50 to 64 year olds can start to be vaccinated following a previous announcement. Two days later, on March 24, a federally-selected regional mass vaccination site will open at Ford Field in Detroit to administer an additional 6,000 doses per day for two months.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced that the first case of variant B.1.351 of COVID-19 has been identified in a child in Jackson County.

The health department has not specified how the boy became infected, but a case investigation is underway to determine close contacts and if there are any other associated cases.

This new variant was originally detected in South Africa in October 2020 and shares some mutations with the B117 variant. The first case of the B117 variant – originally detected in the UK – has been identified in Washtenaw County.

The state of Michigan has relaxed its COVID-19 restrictions on bars and restaurants, including the capacity limit and nighttime curfew.

On Tuesday March 2, Gov. Gretchen whitmer and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced that restrictions on indoor dining have been revised.

Starting Friday, March 5, Michigan restaurants and bars will be allowed to fill up to 50% of their capacity, with a maximum of 100 people, according to the state.

“I am proud that we can take this positive step without compromising public health,” said Whitmer.

Since February 1, restaurants have been capped at 25% of their capacity. From mid-November to the end of January, no indoor meals were allowed in bars or restaurants.

The number of confirmed cases of a more contagious variant of COVID-19 in Michigan has increased by more than 100 this week, suggesting there is an “undetected spread” in the community.

Dr Joneigh Khaldun, chief medical director of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, said the state has confirmed 422 cases of the COVID-19 B117 variant.

This number has increased from 314 cases identified six days earlier (February 24).

Through a partnership with SMART, Macomb County is offering a new vaccination location in Sterling Heights.

The vaccination site is at Sterling Heights Senior Center on Utica Road, between Schoenherr and Van Dyke roads.

Appointments are required. Residents and eligible workers can call the SMART Macomb Vaccine line at 586-421-6579.

Wayne County has announced that it will open several vaccination clinics for residents 65 and older.

Vaccination clinics will begin on February 23, according to County Director Warren Evans.

“I am happy that Wayne County is now able to start vaccinating seniors,” Evans said. “I know everyone is anxious to get back to normal in a safe way. Our team is working hard to ensure that all of our residents can get vaccinated against COVID as quickly as the vaccine is available. “

There are no walk-in appointments and seniors must make an appointment by calling the site number in their community.
