A “handful” of people recently tested positive for COVID-19 in Provincetown, according to chief executive Alex Morse, who said via Facebook that local authorities were monitoring the situation.
“We are aware of a handful of positive COVID cases reported over the past few days among people who have spent time in Provincetown,” Morse wrote on Monday. “We are in contact with the Ministry of Health and Outer Cape Health Services and are closely monitoring the data. “
Morse added a bullet point to “keep in mind” as the city reacts to positive cases.
Among those points was the fact that vaccines work and that almost all residents of Outer Cape Town year-round and part-time are fully vaccinated. But Morse also included warnings about the so-called “breakthrough” infections in people who test positive after vaccination, as well as the threatening variant Delta.
“A number of the reported cases are breakthrough cases, meaning testing positive for COVID despite being fully vaccinated,” Morse wrote. “Once vaccinated, the symptoms are less severe and much more manageable. “
Regarding Delta, the city manager said that “the Delta variant now accounts for more than half of new coronavirus cases in the United States – 52%. Almost all new cases nationwide – 99.7% – are in people who have not been vaccinated. “
Morse said city officials never expected COVID-19 to go away completely.
“We have to do our best to handle it,” Morse wrote. “Vaccines, better treatment and more research since last year have put us in a better position to do this. As always, we encourage people to make the decisions that are right for them. We have a lot of visitors to town and given the volume, it is inevitable that cases will continue to emerge over the summer.
He said the city will keep residents informed in the future.
“We will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available,” Morse wrote.
