New Covid cases soar in New York

Albany, NY – The number of new confirmed cases of Covid-19 increased in New York in July.

The state confirmed 573 new cases on Sunday and 666 on Saturday. It’s been on the rise since late June, when new cases hit their lowest point in the pandemic.

The seven-day average of new cases rose from a low of 307 on June 25 to 490 on July 8, an increase of more than 59%.

The percentage of people testing positive for Covid has also increased in recent weeks and was 1.1% yesterday. At times in June, the rate of positive tests fell to 0.3%.

The statewide seven-day average of the percentage of people who tested positive was 0.88% on Sunday, down from an extended low of 0.4% in June, according to state data, although the number of tests administered has also decreased.

The numbers are still well below their worst points. New cases reached a record high of nearly 20,000 in one day in January, and the average seven-day positive test rate was nearly 8% statewide.

And while the number of cases has started to rise again, hospitalizations have remained low so far.

Yesterday, only 348 people were in New York City hospitals because of Covid. That’s nine more than the day before, but broadly in line with numbers in recent weeks and well below the most recent high of over 9,000 in January.

Deaths have not increased either. A person in New York City died on Sunday due to Covid. It was the second day in a row that the disease took only one life.

The statewide death toll is now 43,011.

More than 61% of all New Yorkers have now received at least one dose of a Covid vaccine and more than 55% are fully vaccinated, according to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention.

Governor Andrew Cuomo lifted most of New York’s remaining Covid rules when the state hit 70% of adults with at least one shot in June.
