Despite an increasing number of vaccinations, Long Island continues to see the number of new confirmed COVID-19 infections increase in Nassau and Suffolk counties.
Since Sunday, July 11, Long Island’s average seven-day positive infection rate has fallen from 0.96% to 1.28% of those tested on Thursday, July 15.
Long Island continues to have the highest infection rate of New York’s 10 regions, tied with the Capital Region and ahead of New York (1.13%), the only other to reach the infection threshold positive by 1%.
Statewide, the average infection rate fell from less than 0.90% to 1.09% during this period.
There have been 87 new cases of COVID-19 reported in Nassau, bringing the total to 184,830, and 73 in Suffolk, as the cumulative total since the start of the pandemic has risen to 202,120.
The number of new infections in the two counties was the highest of any New York county outside of Manhattan.
No new deaths from the virus have been reported on Long Island, with the death toll standing at 3,407 in Suffolk and 3,182 in Nassau. One death linked to the virus has been reported in Kings County and one in Wayne County as the state’s death toll has reached 43,025 since March 2020.
According to the Department of Health, 79,920 COVID-19 tests were administered in New York City on July 15, resulting in 981 newly confirmed infections for a positive infection rate of 1.23%, up slightly from the day before.
Eighty-two new COVID-19 patients have been admitted to New York City hospitals with the virus as the number has risen to 360 being treated statewide.
In total, more than 73% of New Yorkers over 18 have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 67% are fully vaccinated. Officials said 61.4% of all New Yorkers have received at least one dose, with 55.7% having completed the vaccination process.
As of July 15, 1,557,370 (2,778 new) first doses had been administered to residents of Long Island, while 1,421,514 (2,697) had completed the process, both among the highest rates in the state.
“Thanks to the hard work of New Yorkers, we were able to start to get back to normal, but that doesn’t mean COVID isn’t always a threat,” New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said. “To win this war once and for all, we must continue to capitalize on our most effective weapon – the vaccine.
“Those who continue to avoid it not only put their own well-being at risk, but they also threaten the health and safety of those around them. Now is not the time to gamble with anyone’s health – if you haven’t already, get vaccinated today and help contain the spread of this beast. “
