“You can get the vaccine or the virus. There is no third option.
MADISON, Wisconsin – Dane County doctors say it seems some people think there are three choices when it comes to COVID: get vaccinated and protect yourself, don’t get the shot and live your life, or don’t not get vaccinated, but live with caution enough to avoid the virus. With the hugely contagious delta variant now the dominant strain in Dane County, local doctors say the third option is not a reality.
“If you are not vaccinated, it is not a question of if you will get COVID-19, ”said Dr. Jeff Pothof of UW Health. “His when. “
“The proportion of our cases that are the delta variant has increased very dramatically, very rapidly,” said Brittany Grogan, data analyst for Madison-Dane County public health.
In April and May, Grogan said no cases of the delta strain had been reported in Dane County. As of June, the variant was responsible for a third of all cases. Today, more than 80% of all new cases in Dane County are of the delta strain, and that percentage continues to rise.
“Then unvaccinated people will just have to see what happens,” said Dr Pothof. “Are they getting away with a mild illness?” Or are they unlucky and end up in the hospital? “
99.5% of people who have died from COVID so far this summer were not vaccinated.
