BOSTON (WHDH) – Eighty fully vaccinated Massachusetts residents have died from COVID-19 and the number of groundbreaking cases reported statewide has exceeded 5,000, according to new public health data.
As of July 17, 716 more fully vaccinated residents have tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the number of groundbreaking cases statewide to 5,166, according to figures released by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. Last week, 4,450 cases of the breakthrough were reported.
Fifty-seven fully vaccinated residents were hospitalized and later died from the virus, while 23 others who were vaccinated died without going to hospital.
A total of 272 fully vaccinated people were hospitalized after becoming infected.
Health authorities reported 717 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday. The new positive cases include infections that were reported on Saturday and Sunday. Another 366 cases were reported on Tuesday as the state continues to see a slight increase in the number of daily cases.
The seven-day positivity rate also climbed to 1.18%.
Much of the new cases confirmed in recent weeks have been in people between the ages of 20 and 59.
Boston health officials on Tuesday urged recent visitors to Provincetown to self-isolate and get tested for COVID-19 after a cluster of cases have been linked to the popular tourist town of Cape Cod.
More than 4,300,000 Bay Staters have been fully vaccinated since the vaccines became available.
Unvaccinated people are urged to continue wearing masks, especially indoors, and those who feel ill should get tested for COVID-19.
Cases have increased across the country, mainly due to the spread of the highly contagious Delta variant among unvaccinated Americans.
