MIAMI (WSVN) – As concerns grow over the rapid rise in local cases of COVID-19 largely due to the Delta variant, two hospitals in South Florida are taking action to help stop the spread.
Starting Wednesday, Jackson Health System will suspend visits to most inpatient units.
“This is the pandemic of the unvaccinated,” said Carlos Migoya, CEO of Jackson Health System.
Restrictions on visitors have been reinstated by Jackson Health System as a new cycle intensifies in the battle against COVID-19.
“People who get sick and unvaccinated get sick very quickly,” said infectious disease expert Dr Lilian Abbo. “We didn’t see this in any of the other waves of the pandemic. “
Jackson Health System is currently treating 143 COVID-19 positive patients, 91% of whom are unvaccinated.
Their workload has more than doubled in the past two weeks.
The Memorial Healthcare System has also limited visitors as their positive coronavirus cases rise.
They are currently treating 234 COVID-19 positive patients, 98% of whom are unvaccinated.
Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital is part of the Memorial Health System and also looks after the Delta variant.
“The numbers are rising,” said Caitlin Stella of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.
Hollywood Children’s Hospital is seeing a slow increase in patient numbers.
“The number of adults is exponentially higher, but when we start to see even the tiniest bump, because we’ve been pretty stable for a while, the smallest bump means the numbers are going up,” Stella said.
While most of the new cases are in younger people, an outbreak has been reported at John Knox Village, an assisted living complex in Pompano Beach.
Those who tested positive would have mild symptoms.
“Although we went back to programming, we weren’t running at full capacity,” John Knox Village COO Bill Pickhardt said, “so there’s no way of knowing if there is. had a particular event that people participated in that caused the spread. “
Florida currently leads the country in new coronavirus cases, but the majority are among those not vaccinated.
“Anyone aged 12 and over is eligible for a vaccine. It is our best defense in beating the pandemic, ”said Migoya.
As the new school year approaches, Miami-Dade and Broward County Public Schools are still planning to move forward, with masks being optional for students, faculty and staff.
