COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – The Department of Health and Environmental Control reported 1,794 new confirmed cases and 605 on Monday probable new cases of the virus. These figures are correct as of July 31.
The difference between confirmed and probable cases is based on the type of test a person receives. The probable cases are treated as cases confirmed by the doctors, specifies the DHEC.

As of July 30, DHEC indicates that there were 1,866 new cases of COVID-19 (1,342 confirmed and 524 probable). As of July 29, there were 2,019 new cases (1,400 confirmed and 619 probable).
On Monday, DHEC reported one new confirmed death and no new probable deaths as of July 31. The agency also reported two new confirmed deaths and two probable deaths as of July 30, and four more confirmed deaths and two probable deaths as of July 29.
DHEC is no longer giving a death date for these reports, saying it violates the privacy of the deceased due to the decrease in deaths from COVID-19 statewide.
The agency has also stopped sharing the age range of people who die from COVID-19 each day, but it publishes weekly reports with this information on Tuesday.

While new cases of COVID-19 were down in South Carolina in June, cases have been on the rise since mid-July.
The number of COVID-19 cases remains low from the winter outbreak, but the number of cases is increasing – reaching levels not seen in South Carolina since before the vaccine was readily available.
THE LAST
Hospitalizations in the state are also increasing, with dozens of new people hospitalized with COVID-19 every day. However, the total number of people hospitalized for COVID still represents about a third of the total number of hospitalizations in December and January.
One positive indicator is that new deaths from COVID-19 are relatively small compared to the virus’s winter outbreak, while it was not uncommon to report more than 30 deaths in a day.
“As deaths from COVID-19 decline due to the life-saving COVID-19 vaccines that are available, cases and hospitalizations are currently increasing in South Carolina, as in many other states, as a large portion of the population does not ‘is still not vaccinated,’ DHEC officials said. wrote on the agency website. “We urge all South Carolinians to protect themselves and others by getting vaccinated against COVID-19 if they have not already done so. Vaccines are how we end the COVID-19 pandemic once and for all. “
A recent review of DHEC data suggests that people who are not fully vaccinated account for nearly all hospitalizations and deaths from COVID-19.
Vaccines are readily available statewide.

COVID-19 HOSPITALIZATIONS
From Monday, the US Department of Health and Human Services claims that 78.03% of inpatient beds in South Carolina are in use while 72.99% of intensive care beds are in use.
There are 709 hospital patients who have COVID-19, HHS reported. Of these patients, 187 are in intensive care. This represents about 100 more people hospitalized since Friday and nearly 30 more people in intensive care.
On Tuesday, DHEC reported 1,923 ventilators available in the state, with 383 in service. COVID-19 patients represent 49 of them.
NOTE: DHEC now only updates its hospitalization dashboard once a week, which is why WIS now relies on HHS data for a daily hospitalization report. Fan numbers will be updated weekly.

MONITORING MIS-C AND VIRUS VARIANTS
DHEC has a dashboard that indicates the number of cases of Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) associated with COVID-19 in South Carolina.
It also shows how much case of different variants were found as is, by type.
To date, there have been 140 reported cases of the highly contagious delta variant of COVID-19 in South Carolina. However, health officials say there are likely many more cases of the delta variant in the state. DHEC only sends a random sample of positive tests to look for variants.
KEY INDICATORS OF COVID-19 IN HC
Below is the dashboard of DHEC’s key indicators. It is intended to give a “big picture” of important data points used to measure the spread of COVID-19 in the state.
It shows trends in cases, tests, deaths, hospitalizations, etc.
DHEC says all of these factors should be taken into account when assessing the spread of COVID-19 in South Carolina.
