Call me crazy, but it looks like the 49ers are pitching Jimmy Garoppolo for a trade.
It seems painfully obvious. Today, the 49ers have invited over 20,000 fans to Levi’s Stadium to watch Garoppolo’s practice. He was the star – he threw 24 passes, while rookie Trey Lance, who had been the main draw in training camp until today, threw just 18 passes.
Garoppolo took all the reps with the starters and had to deal with a first string defense that his top five defensive linemen lacked – Nick Bosa, Dee Ford, Javon Kinlaw, Arik Armstead and Samson Ebukam – plus the starting linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair and starting security Jaquiski Tartt. It was seven of his best players who had come out.
Looks like the 49ers were grooming Garoppolo to be at his best. He managed to stay in the pocket without moving. And he still couldn’t throw a touchdown pass until the 49ers also placed starting cornerbacks Jason Verrett and Emmanuel Moseley.
It looks like the 49ers want to increase Garoppolo’s shares as much as possible so they can trade him to, say, the Houston Texans once they trade Deshaun Watson. I’m just guessing.
Here is the shot by shot of the morning of each quarterback.
JIMMY GAROPPOLO.
1. Missed the snap and the defense recovered. It was the third failed shot of the Garoppolo camp.
2. Completed a 15-yard pass through the middle of Brandon Aiyuk while executing a curl against Jason Verrett.
3. Complete a 10 yard pass to Kevin White by performing a left-to-right search route.
4. Complete a pass in the left flat to Kyle Juszczyk who shot up and gained 10 yards.
5. Fired a pass at Aiyuk en route and was nearly intercepted by Verrett.
6. Thrown an incomplete pass to George Kittle, who was passed by Fred Warner and Jimmie Ward. Bad decision from Garoppolo. Ward almost intercepted the pass.
7. Complete a 5 yard pass to Kittle by executing a stick run down the middle.

11. Rolled left and sent a two yard pass to Kittle on 2nd and 5th.
12. Thrown an incomplete pass to Aiyuk with a quick tilt on 3rd and 2. Verrett reversed the pass.
13. Rolled left and dumped a pass into the flat to tight end Charlie Woerner, who ran 15 yards.
14. Passed 10 yards to Aiyuk while digging.
15. Complete a 10 yard pass to Deebo Samuel digging.
16. Thrown the ball out of the end zone.
17. Thrown an incomplete pass to Samuel who quickly lost to 3rd and goal of 5. Verrett broke the pass.
18. Thrown an incomplete pass behind Mostert on the right flat.
19. Passed a 10-yard pass through cross to Mohamed Sanu who ran for 20 yards after the catch. The pass was behind Sanu, but he turned and caught her anyway.
20. Completed a 5 yard pass to Mostert running a fast route.
21. Passed a 5 yard pass to Sanu with a loop down the middle.
22. Thrown on Aiyuk in the end zone and his pass was interrupted by backup cornerback BW Webb.
23. Passed to Kittle in the right flat for 5 yards.
24. Thrown an incomplete pass behind Sanu who was going obliquely into the end zone and was open.
25. Thrown a 5-yard touchdown pass to Kittle who ran a fade route against 5-foot-10 rookie cornerback Deommodore Lenoir.
It was Garoppolo’s last throw of the morning. He finished 15 for 24 with a touchdown and a fumble.
TREY LAUNCHES
1. Passed a 20-yard pass to Aiyuk crossing a deep right-to-left crossover route after being sacked by a defensive lineman who beat right tackle Tom Compton.
2. Completed a shovel pass to Richie James Jr. performing a jet sweep.
3. Thrown an incomplete pass over Aiyuk’s head crossing a deep crossing road from left to right.
4. Completed a 15 yard pass to Aiyuk using a post route.
5. Completed a 5 meter check to Trent Sherfield.
6. Complete a 5-yard pass to Ross Dwelley after being sacked.
7. I attempted to throw a screen pass over a defensive lineman’s head in the face and his pass was reversed.
8. Passed Samuel 10 yards while performing a curl.
9. Complete a 20 yard pass to Sherfield using a deep route. It’s a pass Garoppolo can’t finish. Lance launched it with power and anticipation.
10. Complete an 8-yard pass to Sherfield with a quick exit on the 1st and 10th.
11. Thrown the ball against the pressure on 3rd and 2.
12. Has run a zone read to his left and gained 5 yards.

14. Thrown the ball to instant pressure on 1st and 10th.
15. Run a scanned area to the left and gained 10 yards at 2nd and 10.
16. Thrown an incomplete pass to Jauan Jennings while completing a search run on 1st and 10. Mark Fields broke the pass.
17. Rushed to his left and gave James a 10-yard pass on the 2nd and 10th.
18. Was sacked on the 1st and 10th by Kentavius Street who beat Tom Compton.
19. Complete a 20 yard pass to Sherfield by running a deep route on the 2nd and 15th. Another power roll with anticipation.
20. Complete a 5 yard pass to Ross Dwelley by running a fast route on the 1st and 10th.
21. Thrown a pass that hit rookie running back Elijah Mitchell in the hands. Mitchell dropped him and tipped Marcell Harris who made the interception.
Lance played well the first half of practice when he managed to throw at Aiyuk and Samuel, then had some problems in the second half when he couldn’t play with any starters. He also failed to initiate contraband passes and he only took two area readings, unlike the past few days. Looks like the 49ers want to keep it a secret for now.
I always say Lance will start week 1. The 49ers need to trade Garoppolo first.
