The Florida family of an unvaccinated man who died of COVID-19 will host a vaccination event at his funeral in his honor to urge others to get vaccinated.

Marquis Davis, a 28-year-old father and husband, was hospitalized after contracting COVID-19 in July, according to WFTV and ABC News. According to ABC News, Davis was on a ventilator for about six days before he died.

His wife, Charnese Davis, told WFTV he wanted to be vaccinated when he was released from the hospital.

“He was in the hospital. He said, ‘Bae, I’m going to get the shot when I get out of here,’” Davis told the outlet. “So he was going to understand. I was like, ‘Good. I’m so glad you said that, but it’s too late.’

Faith Temple Christian Center pastor Dr R. Shaun Ferguson helped the family coordinate a vaccine and COVID-19 testing site during Davis’ funeral and awakening, according to reports. The event will offer Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer vaccines to the community.

The highly infectious Delta variant, which is said to be as contagious as chickenpox, quickly spread to the United States. Health officials have warned that the most vulnerable are the unvaccinated, especially in states like Florida, where there is an increase in hospitalizations amid a new wave of the virus, as reported USA Today.

“Now we see things change completely with this delta variant.
