It snowed in the city of Los Angeles on Thursday, a rare event that has created excitement and confusion in the metropolitan area, according to the Los Angeles Times.
"At noon, scattered showers of rain and snow over #SoCal," tweeted the Los Angeles branch of the National Weather Service. "Isolated thunderstorms are possible with a small hail."

The NWS also explained the difference between ice pellets and snow on Twitter to Californians.
"A lot of confusion today." If the precipitate bounces, it contains ice – call it slush or a small hail, "tweeted the agency. "It's raining in flakes that's snow."
Okay, that's the snow! A lot of confusion today. If the precipitate bounces, it contains ice – call it sleet or small hail. If it's raining flakes in the snow, the white balls are melted flakes called graupel. #CAwx #LArain #CAstorm https://t.co/Awdddmp7tc

An NWS scientist told L.A. Times that the snow could go down to 1,000 feet above sea level. Forecasters told the newspaper that local highways could suffer significant delays. If the snow fell in downtown Los Angeles, it would be the first time since 1962, according to the newspaper.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff and others have also tweeted footage of the snow.
Hello from one of our coldest patrol stations! Last night #LASD @PalmdaleSheriff I had a little snow. Not much 30 or 110 degrees, MPs grab a hoop and a patrol. We will test the deputy sheriff trainee in # AV411 this weekend #Palmdale #JeuneMotivation pic.twitter.com/SRSNPIWJ1E
