Humanity is certainly aiming for a strategic victory this month, overtaking other contenders in the increasingly shrinking pool of the best games in August that we have been eagerly awaiting. Better yet than just hanging on, Amplitude Studios just announced that their Civ-alike will also be coming to Xbox Game Pass for PC at launch. That, and they’ve put together an eye-catching trailer full of big numbers to show off how high you can get in their 4X ’em up later this month.
If you want the stats, Amplitude says humanity has 60 cultures that can be transformed into over a million different combinations as you progress through the ages to glory. There are 129 units and ten biomes and 122 costumes for your highly customizable avatar. Hell, they sure have the numbers.
How does all that quantity compare to quality? Nate tried Humankind earlier this summer, after he also had a chance to try it last year. “Overall, I felt the game had turned out to be pretty much what I had hoped for: a solid, big-ticket strategy game with the power to casually cut the rest of my life, eight hours at a time, ”he says in his overview of humanity.
There are a few caveats, though some attributes of Nate to the 4X genre in general, like being geared towards making strategic decisions that are optimal rather than interesting. He’s already figured out how to create a self-reproducing group of cavemen, which I think is hilarious. Maybe not until the fifth time you do.
Humankind launches August 17 on Steam, Epic Games Store, Stadia and, yes, Xbox Game Pass for PC.
