Another day, another rumor on social media.
A social media post claims that contact at gas pumps is a major source of the rapidly spreading delta variant.
The message claims:
“The hospital sent a message this morning that the Covid-19 / delta mutant virus appears to be spreading rapidly through gas pumps, asking everyone to wear gloves or use paper towels during the refueling and handling – please share. Please send it to everyone in your contact list. Don’t leave this information to yourself. Make it available to all your family and friends.
The message does not indicate which hospital supposedly sent the message or when it only adds the vague “this morning”.
This is not the first time that the gasoline pump rumor has spread. At the start of the coronavirus pandemic in March 2020, Facebook posts started circulating, making similar claims about gas pumps spreading the virus.
At the time, Snopes said the results were mixed, meaning it is possible that gas pumps or other commonly handled items could transmit the virus. “We found no substantial report of anyone with been infected this way for the time being “.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, the primary method of spreading COVID and the delta variant remains person-to-person contact.
“It is possible that a person will contract COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their mouth, nose or maybe their eyes, but this is not believed to be is the primary means by which the virus is spread, ”the CDC said.
To prevent the spread of COVID, the CDC recommends:
- Get a vaccine
- Wear a mask if you are not fully immunized or if you are in places of high transmission
- Practice social distancing
- Avoid crowds and poorly ventilated spaces
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after being in a public place, blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they are dry. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
